Training
What Is Advanced Training?
Advanced training is based on the principles of Roadcraft and Motorcycle Roadcraft. These are the manuals used by the Police and other Emergency Services for training drivers and riders. Through the development and refinement of your driving or riding ability, our aim is to boost your skills and competence, whilst also lowering the risks you face.
What Will I Learn?
The syllabus is centred on the system of car or motorcycle control. The fundamental elements of control are the same for both vehicles and are comprised of the following:
• Information
• Position
• Speed
• Gear
• Acceleration
As well as improving your machine control, we will focus on enhancing your observation, anticipation, and planning helping you to become safer and smoother on the road.
How Is It Delivered?
We generally assign tutors to work with you on a one-to-one basis. This approach ensures that you receive personalised guidance throughout your advanced training. However, it might be necessary to allocate a different tutor if circumstances dictate. After an initial assessment, a personalised training programme will be put together for you. This will take account of your skill experience and ability (SEA).
We would normally expect a rider or diver with no previous advanced knowledge to be test ready after 10 -12 sessions. Each session should last around 2 hours including a break. The break allows for a review of what has happened and for the consumption of tea and cake. Other dietary requirements are catered for!
Whose vehicle do I use?
You will use your own vehicle, or a vehicle that you have permission to use and are insured to drive. The vehicle must be road worthy, insured, and if necessary, have a current MOT certificate. It should be capable of reaching and maintaining the national speed limit on dual carriageways and motorways (70 mph).
Is There Homework?
There is a theoretical aspect to your training, and you will be expected to have a good knowledge of Roadcraft and The Highway Code. Please do not worry too much about this. Your tutor will walk you through what is required. Your learning will take place in bite size chunks and should be easily achievable. If you are concerned about this, or have any difficulty in this regard, please let your tutor know. We are experienced in dealing with various situations and can usually find a solution that works.
Costs
To benefit from RoSPA Glasgow’s training, you must become an associate group member. The initial joining fee is £30. Yearly membership is £20 for untested members or £10 per year for those with a valid RoSPA test.
Training is provided at no cost; however, motorcycle associates are requested to note that their tutors use their own bikes to deliver training and are asked to contribute to the expenses they incur. For fairness the group suggest an appropriate amount of £12 per session, The Motorcycle training Officer will provide further information to you at the time your training begins.
